Susan lulusan Universitas Katolik di Washington dan pergi mengikuti Audisi di New York untuk Joe tahun 1969. Lebih dari 15 tahun, Susan memulai karirnya dan berbagai piala award mulai ia dapatkan dari hasil kerja kerasnya. Tahun 1992, Susan mengambil 4 piala award sekaligus untuk kategori Best Actress pada film Dead Man Walking tahun 1995. Award pertamanya hanya berupa nominasi pada tahun 1980.
